Hundreds of Iranian journalists downed tools in protest at a worsening clampdown on the pro-reform media and the death of an Iranian-Canadian journalist in custody here in still unexplained circumstances. Called by the reformist Iranian Centre for the Protection of Journalists (ICPJ), the six-hour strike from 4 pm to 10 pm was designed to have the maximum impact on Saturday's morning editions.
The reformist strikers demanded the removal of Tehran chief prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi, a prominent hardliner who as head of the press courts from May 2000 until April this year oversaw the closure of nearly 100 pro-reform titles and the jailing of dozens of journalists. "In view of the bad record of Saeed Mortazavi and his leading role ... we demand his removal from his current post, also we want the release of all the imprisoned," said a list of demands handed out by the striking journalists.
